LEDC wants to share some stories about our members. This newsletter will present the story about EL GUANACO BAKERY AND CAFE.
Oscar and Dolores Murcia came to Minneapolis in 1996 with a plan. In their home country of El Salvador they had owned a bakery that enjoyed success for about 3 years. When they decided to come to the Twin Cities they knew that eventually if things looked good they would again try and open a bakery that served the delicious bakery products they knew and so expertly created back home.
Initially they worked for others for a few years but eventually opened a janitorial business that is named “Oscar’s Professional Cleaning Services”. They have been operating this business successfully for about 3 years and while enjoying this work they missed life as bakers. They had been saving their money for their plan, a bakery, and took time to assess their ability to open the second business and decided they could and began the process of finding a location. They chose the busy and expanding commercial corridor along E. 7th St. in St. Paul, near the Consulate’s offices. They decided on a great storefront at 849 E. 7th St. near the intersection of E. 7th and Arcade. They came to LEDC for help with securing financing and help in completing the project. They had run into some problems and needed to understand better the process for opening a food establishment in St. Paul. We were able to help move the project along and provided some guidance through start up.
They also decided to add something different to their bakery such as coffee and other beverages as well as delicious pupusas and other dishes from El Salvador. They felt strongly that the traffic and local community would support additional products from them. They opened in early July and are building up a following of retail customers as well as wholesale bakery customers. Stop in and say hello and taste their wonderful pupusas and tasty baked goods.
